Who I am
Ten Digits is the studio of Travis Mullen — a self-taught woodworker, artist, and storyteller with all his fingers intact.
I build custom furniture and boxes that blend clean lines with expressive, myth-inspired details. Most of my work pairs ash and walnut, one light, one dark, chosen not just for their contrast, but for their stories. Ash, for instance, plays a key role in Norse mythology, where the first human was carved from an ash log that washed ashore. That kind of meaning, subtle, rooted, and enduring runs through everything I make.
Before woodworking, I earned a master’s in English and taught at the University of South Carolina. I later built custom pieces for Bricker and Beam in Columbia, SC, and now teach carpentry at Guilford Technical Community College. My boxes often feature layered laser-cut art, inspired by myth and shaped by the grain of the wood itself. Some clients say they look like they *should* move and that’s by design. I like my pieces to surprise quietly, with meaning that reveals itself slowly.
Craft has been a lifeline for me. I live with PTSD and bipolar disorder, and making things with care, by hand, from raw material is deeply therapeutic. I’m lucky to be able to share that with both clients and students.
I’m currently accepting commissions and will also be offering a small collection of ready-made work. If you're drawn to something in the grain, I’d love to hear from you.
